Finally getting around to blogging my Sister and her girls! We shot this session on the farm in May, and had a blast! I love just letting kids be themselves, and running with them, chasing them for the photos. It lets their true personality shine. Posing is good for a few (Mamas and Gmas love those), but the spirit of their childhood is what you really want to catch and lock up in a mason jar. Childhood is awesome.

Alex + Megan

I have a story to tell, and it relates to the photos, promise. [well sort of]...

Myself, my brother, sister and cousins would always go back on the farm with Papaw in the summertime. We'd build forts, swim in the creek, collects creek rocks, play with the cats (well the boys would help Papaw and us girls would play with the cats;), and explore non-stop.

One day while riding down the lane with Papaw (all of us kids were in the back), we decided to play a game: see who can sit on the tailgate the closest to the edge without falling off (we were smart, eh?). The problem here, is that my Papaw had a glass eye and couldn't hear very well. He also had George Jones blaring up front most of the time.

We started out taking turns, inching our little bottoms closer and closer to the edge of the tailgate. Then it came Alex's turn, and guess what? He won the game, before losing. :) Papaw was crossing the creekbed and bump, PLOP, out goes Alex! Luckily it was a spot where the creek was pretty low. I kid you not, poor Alex ran behind the truck, in all the dust, for at least a half a mile. All while all of us were smacking the top of the cab and hollering "PAPAW! STOP! PAPAW!!!" Eventually Papaw heard our cries and Alex made it out okay. I will never forget that memory of Alex. One of our many adventures on the farm.

I promised this would relate, so I said all that to say that my cousin Alex and his wife, Megan, have been married for 6 years on July 3rd. They have been thru a lot as a couple, and have only become stronger thru the years. Always the house to go play Apples to Apples at, not to mention cornhole! So I was pleased to photograph them when I was back home last May on their farm. Their love is definitely still there, all the kissing and playfulness was amazing to watch (and photograph!). I can only hope that 6 years after marrying I can have that same amazing love, too.

Johnny+Tia I Engagement

I took a cross country road trip with Dustin and his friend Johnny a few years back. I actually meet Johnny the day we left for our adventure. We had a blast and Johnny talked a whole lot about his girlfriend, Tia.

Naturally, I meet Tia when we came back from the trip, and I was wowed. She is beautiful, genuine and so sweet. Johnny and Tia are such a great couple, they've been together since High School, which is awesome in and of itself. I don't want to get it wrong, but I believe they've been dating for 7 years! (correct me if I'm wrong Tia!)

So when Johnny popped the question to Tia in Germany, we were all very excited for them! How perfect, and in Germany?! I mean heck yeah! Congrats Johnny and Tia!!! You two are awesome! Can't wait to shoot your wedding in the Fall.

I know how hard being a parent is, and I can only imagine how hard it can be being the Dad. Always having to succumb to Mama's request, feeling a little uncertain of your diaper changing skills, and never catching a break at home. So this one is for all the Daddy's out there doing their best, and making us Mama's proud!

There I said it, now get back to work.

I am going to bless you with photos on this Father's Day & yes, they have a daddy in them. Tis' the season!

This family is simply adorable. The little girl, Lily, is extremely sweet and very laid back. You can tell she has a good Mama (and Daddy)! Love this family, love, love, love.

Okay, so this is a recent shot of my niece, Tori. I'm wigging out on how old she's getting! The girl is growing up, and I'm growing old. I keep telling her she should model. She has that serious look down pat, and is a natural in front of the camera. Beautiful! Did I mention she's really tall for her age? Even better for modeling...ah, what am I saying? Tori, you can be anything you want. Like a Doctor, Lawyer, or the next President! ;) Love you, Tori!!! & stop making me feel so old!

Joyce + Bryan - New Home

Tucked back into a sweet corner on a lovely road in "Loo-ah-vul", you will find an old home with new owners. A very nice couple, Joyce & Bryan, decided to buy this home and renovate it. All of it.

Below are some shots from our session in May. It was almost overwhelming stepping into the old house, so enormous and full of history. I would call it a dream home, with undeniable potential. Awesome place. Check out their blog here. Very inspiring to take on such a project, I hope I can do so myself one day!

I've been MIA from my little blog for too long. My deepest apologies to whoever's out there checking in.

I have so much to share with you from my trip to Kentucky, which is coming to an end this Wednesday. Lots of weddings, engagements, babies and families to post up. Lots of love and laughter, and warm fuzzy wuzzies. But this post has a more serious tone.

Last night, I was honored to capture some of Matt's belongings, and I have throw together a little collage. I don't mind if you want to use the image in Matt's honor for your Facebook or whatnot, just ask that you don't change the image in any way, and give credit to the photog, me. I trust ya.

I'd like to remember our dear friend, LCPL Matthias Numon Hanson, who lost his life in battle this past February. It's easy to go on with our lives, and forget those who've fought for our freedom. I catch myself going on about my way as if our lost hadn't just happened a few months back. As the days pass, we grow farther from how it was, and more comfortable with how it is. I know it can feel shameful to have a moment where you've 'forgotten' all that has happened. Just to recall/remember all too well the reality of our loss. Matt is a true hero, and more brave than I could ever be. He served his country and his family well, and I will always honor and remember him. I'll always think of you Matt, when driving thru our country; the rolling hills, the sunsets, forests and oceans. When the light is at it's glorious peak. You'll always be there with us.

I'm alive!

Sorry I've neglected my blog lately. I have an insane amount of catching up to do, and a gazillion photos to post! Weddings, Seniors, Engagements, oh my!

First off, check out this Senior I shot this past week. She's amazing, and beautiful! I didn't have to do a thing, she's a natural. :) I kept telling her and her sister (not photographed), that they're names should be Giselle and Jasmine, hence the post title. Stunning Senior!

I'm starting to feel good. Like strong good. Like when I was a teenager good. When I could run, jump, play and flip good. And it feels so gooooood.

I was at the gym, running on the good ole treadmill last week and watching Dr. Oz (I love his show, he is so inspiring)! And he said something that has stuck with me. "If the high school version of yourself was to see you today, what would he/she say?"

I started thinking about my health, how I used to feel and how I feel now. I know I'm not in the same shape as I was then, but I'm on a short path leading my straight there. I can sorta-kinda remember the way it felt to stretch, cheer and feel those abs crunch. This is my motivation. I believe it has always been my motivation deep down: There is absolutely no reason why we can't stay in great shape until the end of our lives. It can be done, has been done. I'm determined to always stay on top of my game and be able to run around and play like a kid with my grandchildren.

Someone once told me, concerning left over baby weight, 'that's just how it is.' I was so upset about that. I often thought back to it and refused it. No way is that how it is. We are in control of our own bodies. Although, if you lay down and surrender to that theory, you're right, it will be just how it is. I've heard a million complaints on how celebrities lose their baby weight so fast, and it's not fair because they had a nutritionist/trainer/etc. I even said it myself! The thing is, if we're too lazy to do it ourselves, and too poor to hire these people, then yes, of course we will never be healthy. And if I care, we care, enough about ourselves to be our own nutritionist/trainer/motivator then we will look dang good and feel dang amazing.

After I had Nora, I never wanted to feed her junk. I was determined to start good habits. The most precious thing we have is our bodies, we should take care of it. I should take care of mine. We should take care of each other. It's not okay to say it's okay and live a little, esp if we live a little all the time. There is heart disease and diabetes in my family, which means, if I don't take care of myself now, I'll more than likely inherit them. I have the answer and possible cure to something that could/will take my life early, what the heck! That's a blessing. Why not use the information to my advantage. And if I end up inheriting them in the end, at least I know I did my best to prevent it.

One more thing, then I'm done. :) You know when people say, "I'm going to die anyways"? Did it ever occur that it isn't how long you live, but how much you can do in the time you have left? It's not about living longer, but living healthier. Enjoying life to the max. Get out and do something! run, breathe deep, hike up a huge mountain and surf the pacific. If I don't do it now, I'll never do it. And I don't want to be the old lady on her deathbed begging my grandchildren to do what I never did.

-FYI- This post is for me. Not for anyone else but myself. Sometimes when you write stuff down, especially for others to read, you tend to stick to your guns. Emily, just eat right and stay active. And never buy a bigger size anything.

So with that, I feel guilty as heck for eating those M&M's Dustin brought home last night. Just no reason for that garbage, sugar and high fructose corn syrup! I bought all fresh produce yesterday, and I'm about to go enjoy a nice cold orange and take my little one to the park. Seize the day!!! And I'll shutup, too much coffee makes me nuts! I swear.

I wanted to shoot a quick portrait last night of my friend, Katie. It was about to storm, and was extremely last minute so we hopped in the Jeep in and took off before the sun was completely down. Wyoming Ranch

This past weekend I was granted one of my wishes. To visit and shoot at a Ranch in Wyoming. It was like dream, just as you'd imagine a ranch to be. Mountains, open range, cabins, old tractors and chicken coops. My lovely client, Gennell, has a beautiful soul and allowed us (me & my 2 babes, dustin and nora) to explore and enjoy her family's Ranch. I could have stayed for days on end; just walking around, hiking, camping, taking photos and fishing. Amazing day. Amazing family. Amazing ranch.

My Birthing Experience

There are many reason why I have kept these photos to myself. One, and let's just face it, I was a bigger version of me. Swollen and puffy. I see my face in these photos and my eyes bulge out along with a gasp and, "Nobody told me I looked so swollen!" Two, I dunno, they just seemed sacred. And should be kept private. Three, it's a little personal. I mean, I'm giving birth.

Then I decided, last night (after a glass of wine), that 'what the heck'. What it was was beautiful, amazing, and should be shared. This will be a very personal post, and so what and good for me. I usually pride myself on being an open book. I show my ugly along side of my pretty, I tell the truth and I try not to judge. Because we are all the same, with the same insecurities and embarrassments. Life shouldn't be about presenting your best self, but presenting your true self. We should leave room for all to feel the same. So you have a crazy family member? We all do. So you have a roll somewhere you'd rather not say, we all do. So you've made some bad choices, we all have. Who are we too judge. We are all equal. And we all are a part of this amazing circle of life.

Speaking of circle of life, I hope you enjoy the following video montage of my experience giving birth. And I hope you realize how important and special it is to have a birthing photographer. I mean, we all have wedding photographers, it's a must, heck even a rule. And if you ask me, having a birthing photographer should be an even bigger rule! The photos are priceless. I would pay an arm and a leg for photos like this over a million Sears Studio looking shots of my baby the next week.

My birthing photographer was the amazing, Meg Fenton. Who I became great friends with in the Photojournalism program at WKU. Thanks Meg, for the photos and enduring the insane experience alongside of me.

*P.S. I know that being all swollen at the end of your pregnancy is not ugly, it's beautiful. I know this. I mean, I believe it to be true. With everyone else, but not me. ;) Kidding...ish.

Family Shoot

Last weekend I was privileged to shoot a wonderful family here in Gillette. It was a bit cold, so we only spent a little bit of time outside, then took a few in the studio. I can't wait for warm weather, lush fields and pretty wildflowers. :) Oh, & I have a Ranch shoot coming up next weekend, I couldn't be more excited!

Home Grown and Hand Sewn

So I consider this a bit of a fail. But, Dustin and I took Nora to the studio last night and well, she didn't cooperate as well as we'd hoped. And Momma forgot to bring the bubbles to entertain her. Plus it was almost her bedtime, yadda yadda. Mommy woes. :)

We were trying to get some photos of her in this awesome hand-sewn shirt and headband that my good friend, Leah, made. Check her out at Etsy here: Mimi Loves Sookie. She's uber talented and cute to boot.

So I thought I'd share a couple photos with you, even if I'm not ridiculously proud of them. But hey, that's what a blog is for! The good, the bad, and the ugly!

RIP Matthias Hanson

Today we lost a great man. Matthias Hanson. With his icy blue eyes, shy ways and sweet manner, he won the hearts of everyone he met. Matt became part of my family thru the years, and will always remain. I will never forget the Christmas' shared, all the memories at Megan's, and every moment of laughter and love. It's a tragedy to lose a dear friend, especially at such a young age. We love and miss you, Matt. You will forever be remembered. I honor you for your bravery in the Marines and the War. May you rest in peace. We love you!

I will never forget this day, I was shooting Megan and Alex and Matt had to hold Nora, and she was screaming/crying the entire time. He was so sweet with her and patient.

Nora Update

Here's a little update on my Sonora Rose. (Sometimes I feel like using her whole name, and as her Momma, I usually do that when she's in trouble). But she's not this time. Lucky her. :)

So first I'm going to show you Nora's new eating adventure...using utensils! She's actually doing pretty good with it. I'm not all that surprised, she's loves detail, and she could find a needle in a haystack if need be. Here she is doing her thanggg

Where would we be without our friends?

While I was back in my hometown, I was able to catch up with a good ole friend, let our kiddos run wild and veg out in front of the TV. It was awesome, and I just don't know where I'd be if it weren't for my girl, Adryanne.

And I'm not sure where Nora would be without some Ava in her life. (Ava is Adryanne's oldest girl & Nora's BF). They were so cute playing together, watching Dora, laughing, crying and taking baths. And let me tell you, if there's one reason to have a baby when your best friend does, is to let them take baths together! It's a must and for some reason, us momma's get so much joy out of it. (Funny to think how a couple years can change how Adryanne & I view an exciting weekend). ;)

Spagetti!

One of the joys about having a baby, is when the baby reaches the milestone of table food. Well, it's a joy to watch, and a pain in the rear to clean up. But oh well, if I didn't have anything to clean I would get out my aggression. Momma needs to scrub hard and beat the chicken or she'll kill her husband. We all know that.

The cleanup I'm talking mostly about is the Spaghetti kind. Nora got her first taste of spaghetti and feeding it to herself. It was so cute. And the bathtub had noodles in it for a weeks. KIDDING, I fished those suckers out and tossed them in trash, I'm not a slob.

So here she is, in all her spaghetti glory.

Favorite Things!

I'm going to start sharing with you my favorite (material) things in life. Things that makes other things easier, prettier, perkier or yummier. Here are a couple for now.

Let's start with perkier. Victoria's Secret Ipex Sports Bra, This is the best sports bra I've ever owned. Hands down. Go get one, now! I have the Blue and Neon Yellow, it's cute and fits like a glove. The first time I've never had to wear 2 sports bra's at once. Let me repeat: The first time I've never had to wear 2 sports bra's at once. I'll toast to that!

If you've ever used Pantene Pro-V then cursed out loud after using a bottle full because your hair felt like gunk, then you need this: Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Special Shampoo. It's the most invigorating, cleansing shampoo I've ever used. And after a few washes my hair felt clean as a whistle. It tingles and the smell is minty-fresh. I'm not kidding when I say, that after using this my scalp felt colder because it could actually feel the wind against it! All that gunk was gone and my hair follicles could breath again. Amen Sistah!

And because it's just wrong to post without pictures, here's a shot of my lil ladybug sulking. (she must have used Pantene Pro-V on accident and just realized the gunk).

Tour Guidin'

After the wild partying on Nora's birthday, a few of the partygoers and myself, wanted more excitement. So we decided an excursion to the farm would be the perfect end to a perfect afternoon.

We all hopped in Dustin's Grandfather's big ole' Dodge and I grabbed the camera. I was beyond excited at this point because I love to show off the farm, and most everyone with us had never seen it! Score! So I was yapping the whole time, talking about how I was baptized on this here creek and telling stories of summers with papaw and my cousins, building forts, falling off the back of the truck, farm dogs and barn cats and diggin up worms for fishin.

As I could tell from everyone's faces, they were pretty excited and into it all as well. But I had this one particular tourist who was beyond excited, he was tore up from the floor up. And all about the cows. Mr. Jackson, little man himself could not keep it together. The entire time he hollered, "Moo Cow!" and his face lit up like it was christmas eve and he caught Santa under the tree. I'm not even kidding, see for yourself...

Bonnie & Clyde

This is for all of you, who (I know) are dying to see what I see out of the window on a drive from Gillette, Wyoming to Rapid City, South Dakota. You see, the thing is, the closest city with a mall or Pier 1 Imports or Boston's Pizza Place is Rapid City, 2 hours from Gillette. So about once a month, or when I've been really good, Dustin will take me there and treat me to some food and the occasional outfit. Only if I've been really good and cooked 'x' amount of meals, plus fold his laundry his way not mine, plus the whole remote control situation we all know and love, and if I do my hair once a week. (that's the hardest part).

Please, don't take any of that to heart, I'm being sarcastic and I'm not very good at it. Obviously I need to get out of the house, I'm losing me marbles. :)

I have no idea why I didn't just erase all of the above...

Her First Birthday!

My little one turned one last week. It's hard to believe, but it's true! She is growing faster than I can keep up, but that's alright with me. I love every minute that goes swooshing by with her. Although I thought she'd have more hair by now. Poor baby :) In due time...

So here are some photos of her fiesta! We threw her big party back home in Kentucky the day before we flew back to Wyoming. Lots of balloons, sweets and some dang good fellowshippin'. Gotta love the fellowship.

Awaiting Case Daniel

My lovely friends, Julianne and Josh, are expecting their first little one, Case Daniel. They're going to make great parents, such a sweet couple! We had a blast shooting and they probably think I'm the clumsiest person in the world! I believe I said, "Oh geez" immediately following a near close trip/fall/buttbusting move a hundred million times.

**Let me go ahead and warn my upcoming clients, I will probably hurt myself during a shoot, only because I'm so into taking the photo I will not pay any attention to where I'm going or what I'm stepping in or what I'm climbing and falling off of. Consider yourself warned. :) I have literally have scars from taking photos.

Back to Julianne & Josh, here are some photos of them and their little egg in the basket. I can't wait to meet precious Case Daniel. I already know he'll be a heartbreaker! Congrats JuJu & Josh :)

A little show with your meal.

When shooting clients on my farm, I always make sure to keep them entertained. Especially the wee little ones.

During a shoot yesterday, big man Daylin got to see my Dad feed hay to the cows. Not only did he get to see it, but we got stuck right in the middle of the whole show. As my clients and I were driving the big Ford Diesel to the back of the farm on our lane, we got caught between the cows and my dad, driving the tractor behind us hauling 2 round bales of hay. It was a slow process, driving thru a herd of cows, but Daylin lit up and enjoyed every minute of it. We came to a rest at the back barn and let my Dad pass on thru, with the cows following. I did a little shooting during it all, because, well, duh. Here's a few shots. Mostly from the truck.

Mimi Loves Sookie

There is this girl, and her name is Leah. She's one of my new friends and is super creative! She just opened a new Etsy Shop called Mimi Loves Sookie. You should go there and buy some of her stuff! Absolutely adorable apparel for the little lovelies in your life. Go. NOW.

So today she came over and I shot some snow photos of her, just because. :) Which is a great reason to have photos taken, by the way.

Childs Play

It's snowed!!!

I just had to go sledding. It's not right not to. So Dustin's brother, Jared, and I suited up and slid down their backyard hill a few times before Nora woke up & I have 2 things to say:

1. What a great workout sledding is! Climbing back up that hill is amazing for your legs and toosh. I'm going back later today just for that reason alone. Beyonce eat your heart out.

2. I squealed like a little girl going down that hill the first time. It felt amazing and I literally felt like I was 8 again. I've been giggly all day since.

Well it's been a while since I've posted anything. Between the holidays, traveling home and fellowshipin' with all my loved ones, I've neglected my blog. I will confess, it was a conscious neglect. Let me digress.

Being home I've had the pleasure to run into people I know, wether at the grocery, a restaurant or at a holiday party. In the small talk that always takes place, the conversation seems to lead to my blog/photos and then I hear this,

"I can't wait to see all the photos from Nora's first Christmas!"

....and if you're reading this and I smiled and said, "Oh I know, there will be lots!" I'm sorry, but I lied. (well, fibbed).

You see, I had all intention of shooting the heck outta her first Christmas. But when the moment came, and I was stuck behind the camera, watching her faces and giggles thru the lens, I decided I couldn't do it anymore. I had to put down the camera and be there. The memories unfolding in front of me are far too precious to me to experience thru a lens. I decided I would be present and participate fully. So I took maybe 3 photos of her first gift and put my camera aside.

Looking back on my decision, I have no regrets. Photos are amazing and priceless to have and capture those special memories, but sometimes, you just have to put the gosh darn camera down and BE IN THEM instead of capture them. I guess that's the curse of being a photographer. So yeah, I don't have a lot to show you, but I have them all in my heart to remember. It was a wonderful Christmas. :)

*I really didn't want to show what I got, because it's super lacking, but oh well- we're all friends and even when it's not a great photo, it's still a great memory.

So I get this phone call from my sister at lunch yesterday, "Will you take some quick pics of me right now?" Being that I have been super busy & was working on some edits, I hesitantly said yes. She comes over, and the only good thing was that it was overcast sky and no harsh light at high noon. So we hopped in the truck while my brother's ladylove watched Nora. Spent about 20 minutes on the farm, and surprisingly came out with some really cute stuff with her! Of course she is just the prettiest thing, so it's not like it was that hard. Here are the photos.

Once upon a time, I attended the WKU Appalachian Cultural Project as a Labbie. It was an amazing experience, yet sadly the only PJ workshop (other than the Strobist Lighting one) that I attended while studying PJ at WKU. At times I catch myself needing more than just portraiture photography, I need the story, the grit and grime of Photojournalism. It's true photography at it's best form. I feel as if I've lost that side of myself, now that I'm a mommy. My identity has changed, along with my subject(s). I have been contemplating going back, just for the love of it. Not sure I'd ever actually work as a PJ for a paper, per se. But I just seriously, whole-heartedly love photojournalism and being a photojournalist. I miss the darkroom and film, developing and laughing, learning and deadlines, critiques and failure with a little success. There is nothing more therapeutic than telling stories without words. It's in the silence of the photo, that we are heard. -me.

So here are some of the photos I snapped in between labby-ing at the workshop. Oddly enough, I felt so at home in Eastern Ky.

Let me just tell you, yesterday was really crazy weather. Which also meant, yesterday was beautiful for photos. Which may I add, yesterday, I didn't have a babysitter. Boo. I was tormented by watching the beautiful clouds move, the sunbeams dance and the field grass sway from my back window and couldn't do much about it. Other than take a pic from a window. I would have taken Nora out to take photos, but it was like 50 mph winds and freezing cold! Figured she would get sick, you know what they say.

I've barely, if not at all, spoken of these two important 'people' in my life. 'People' only because one is not a human but a domesticated wild kitty. The other is a wild kitty too, but is human. ;)

I was SO happy to come home to my precious, maniac cat, Bleu. The amount of guilt I've had for leaving him behind has been unflippinbearable. And now here we are. Together again. Only he had to give me a good scratchin when I first got home. I understand. I deserved it. You're my boy, bleu!

The other wild kitty in my life is Dustin's sister, Tara Jo. My new sistah. She's absolutely the most hilarious person I've ever been around. When she's not bored to death visiting me in my po-dunk town and farming it up. ;) I love you sistah. And here's a photo I snapped of her when I do believe she was feeling 'too cool for school'.

Passin' down the Tradition.

There's one thing I know for sure about Kentucky. It is country.

My brother and I flew in to Ky and surprised our family this past week. I really enjoyed sneaking in and shocking everyone...and I literally snatched Nora from the car seat, ran super fast from the car in the driveway to the front door to ring the doorbell and wanted to pee my pants. My Dad opens the door, his eyes bug out and he says, "Oh my gawwhhdddd!"...just like that. Perfect.

Since I've been away for a while, coming back was like seeing my home place in the eyes of a visitor. It was weird. Slightly sad. A little bitter sweet & a whole lot of memory filled sighs. I went to Target and lingered off the lips of the strangers and their super redneck accents. It was like comfort food. I am seeing rain instead of snow. The cold here is nothing compared to Wyoming. I am actually in person with someone I know. The girl at the store, I know her! The UPS man, that's my cousin! The old man in the truck waving, that's my Uncle!!! It's so nice. just really, so, nice.

The best part? Going to the farm with my Dad for the first feeding of the year. I let Nora ride in his old farm truck in my lap (not on the road, of course). We listened to old country music and watched him hook up and exchange the tractor's front loader to the picks (that's just what I call them) so he could grab a roll of hay on the front and back. We stood out in the back field waiting for him to come and tried to call the cows like my late Papaw did, (SULLLKKKK! SULK!), it was amazing. Refreshing. Best of all, we were passing these memories down to my little one. The next generation. My dad is her papaw. Like how my papaw was to me. I'm pretty sure I could stay back on the farm the rest of my life. Never come back to civilization, the crappy hussle bussle. Just live off the land and have a simple, country life. How peaceful does that sound.

I have been going thru all my old photos from back in the day, it has sprung up some pretty sweet memories and some embarrassing edits to say the least. It's always good to look back and see where you were and how everyone looked. 'The good ole' days' seem to be piling up in my hard drive very quickly and quietly. I want to post old pictures, and give them more of a life, you know- instead of being filed in digi-land standing like little soldiers waited to be called on. :) Here's the first of many. I might make this a regular thing. You just never know.

Ya know, I'm just not one of those lucky gals who find amazing deals when shopping. I'm usually the type that ends up forking over full price moolah for something, then awe in wonderment to the others who seem to be shopping on a different planet than I. But, I got lucky and found one recently. Like really lucky. But it took a ad in the paper for it to dawn on me. The library here in Gillette, WY was selling tons of books for like fifty cents. Jackpot! I scurried on over there with my little Nora and we picked out some books to purchase. She ended up with a "Babies first words" type book, I bought a few Photojournalism books for Dustin and I, then I found one that really struck a chord, "The mask of Motherhood, How Becoming a Mother Changes Everything, and Why We Pretend It Doesn't" by Susan Maushart. Regretfully, that sucker has been collecting dust for about 2 months on the bookshelf. Until I remembered I had it one day when ranting that I have nothing to read. It was like finding the steal all over again. :)

So I've been reading the book. I'm halfway thru it, and I like it. I really like it. It is full of factual info/data on motherhood, pregnancy, etc. It's like the book for the mom, not the baby. It's real, slightly depressing, and sometimes a bit witty. Lots of info on studies conducted of the psychology/sociology/physiology/you-name-it of becoming a new mother. I would definitely recommend this book to any mom, esp new mom out there. Check it out here.

Since becoming a Mother, I have had to shed my old skin, and came into a new. I am a different person. It does change you. It did me. Sometimes it's a sad, to think of my old self, my goals and aspirations. What I used to want for myself. That old Emily. But now it's assuring. I feel more confident, and more peaceful. It's like what you want changes. Your outlook on life is completely shifted and nothing anyone tells you prepares you for how huge it is. How big of a difference. It's unrealistic to portray a 'perfect mother' image, and it puts a lot of pressure on other mother's. If we would just nod and say the truth, that it's amazing and hard, and sometimes we really have no clue how we did it, or how we feel asleep nursing the baby at 3am in the glider and woke up 30 min later...yeah, that happens. Babies teach mothers. Just as much as we teach babies. And I'm certain that this is just the tip of the iceberg for me. I am so happy to be blessed with this journey, and the true test of my womanhood. I will fail at times, but that's what makes it real. I love my new life. I have to. :)

What else is there? This is all I need. She is my constant, in a life so ever-changing, we will always have each other. Kisses to my Nora.

Nonnie's A Coming!

We are so excited! Our very first visitor is coming tomorrow. Nora's Nonnie (aka Dustin's Mom). Ah, I am so ready for a familiar face and warm hug.

This morning, as Nora was playing on her music chair, I told her that her Nonnie was coming tomorrow, and this is what she did. no lie!

and of course, the snow this morning. That would be a road under there.

The hair is just killing me. I love it!

There is something in me that screams domestic. I'm always cooking new and exciting meals for Dustin, baking cookies and breads. I love to cook, but I have to admit, I really love the "Mmm, this is so good!" part at the end. Watching someone eat and enjoy my food is a huge reward in my book. I sort of puff out my chest and do a very pompous hair flip. It's probably really annoying and stupid, but hey, I only do it in the privacy of my own home. (don't we all?).

So I decided to look up the word domestic in the dictionary, and this is what I read:

Hmm, I resent that. Or do I? Nah, I guess it's okay. I mean, to be devoted to your home life or household affairs, is a good thing. Maybe just not so much devoted as concerned. But now here's the part I don't like: Tame. TAME? I mean you can't be serious. I'm sure they are talking about domesticated animals, but then again, they're probably not. Us housewives/women are considered 'tame' to some degree by some. But that's where I draw the line. I want to be wild & free. I don't want to be the perfect domestic desperate housewife type. I do this because I want to, not because I have to. Not because Dustin demands it, or expects it. But because he doesn't, and that makes me want to treat him. Treat him with some good food and a clean house and not to mention clean laundry. I am by no means, 'tame'. :) I am a free woman, taking care of her man, because after all, the best way to a man's heart is thru his stomach. And I don't mind the food either.

Mocha Truffle Cookies Recipe:
Yield: about 5-1/2 dozen

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, cubed
1-1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips, divided
2-3 teaspoons instant coffee granules (I used the new Starbucks Via Instant Brew, very yummy)
2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup baking cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

1. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt butter and 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Remove from the heat; stir until smooth. Stir in coffee granules; cool for 5 minutes. (remember to let it cook, or else you'll scramble your eggs in the next step). Stir in the eggs, sugars, and vanilla. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; fold into the chocolate mixture with remaining chocolate chips.

2. Drop by round teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 9-11 minutes or until tops appear slightly dry and cracked. Cool for 1 minute before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

You might feel the need to roll your eyes and refuse the sappiness I'm going to present to you. Thats fine, I might do the same if I were you. But if you have children of your own, you can't deny the truth. The way they make you feel, the pride and the unconditional love. I swear I get so overcome with joy while watching Nora discover and move around. It's like, the neatest thing. I've created this perfect little individual, and she is so cool. Look at her pick that up, isn't she coordinated? I bet she'll be a the best athlete ever, oh my, did you see how she put that toy back where she got it? I bet she'll be so dang smart, she'll probably find the cure for cancer. It's this way she makes me feel that is so indescribable. She really does make me a better person, & I truly believe that is not adults that produce children, but children that produce adults. My sweet little darling. :)

As I was going back thru my friend Katie's photos, I stumbled upon this one. I find it encompasses what motherhood is all about. Somehow, Mama's can always stop, drop & pose during chaos.

During this particular shoot, her little man Jude and my little one Nora were both coming un-done. I mean screaming, tears and fits. The sun was setting and we were dying to get something worthy for our attempted shoot. Here Jude won't leave his momma alone so we can shoot, and is right up under her tail like a little ducky.

Isn't it true, & I know all mothers do this, that when your mom's screaming, yelling and the kids are going crazy the water is boiling over and the dog's a barking- that if the phone rings, a mother can pick that receiver up and say, "Hello?" in such an endearing, kind & calm way?

:) I just find it all hilarious.

Old Man Winter

Everyone kept saying, "Wyoming Huh...you better get ready for a bad winter!" or "Oh lord, you're gonna have a big winter ahead..." while making a face of fear and anxiety, for me. I just smiled and replied, "yeah, that's what they say..." My mind drifting off to the vision of me looking outside the window to the most beautiful winter I'd ever experience. I know, maybe I won't wander outside the house for months due to the inclement weather, I might go a little stir crazy and I just might, and slightly already have, make heapings of soup like I was feeding an army! But this is what it's all about! Experience a different life. I've never lived anywhere that snow would be such a regular guest all winter long. Especially loads of it! I say, bring it on! Old man winter, show me what you got! :) *(I'll probably refer back to this blog months down the road, cursing myself..) haha.

I'm going to post a picture that wasn't taken today. It was taken the day Dustin purposed to me, on the walk to the creek, before he got down on his knee. Me in my cowboy boots, in the clover, on my farm. It means a lot to me. It makes me think of Dorothy looking at her shoes and clicking them three times, wanting to go home. Wishing those boots (or heels) where stomping on her familiar land again. And whenever I get to missing home, I pull out that picture, and smile. :) And remember, my boots where meant for more than just home...

Since our recent move to Wyoming, we have felt quite lonely. Of course we had each other, but; sometimes a girl just needs a coffee shop buddy, and a guy needs some 'man time', or whatever they call it. :) Lo and behold the day I met Katie. We hit it off right away and spent all day together, then the next and the next. She has a little man the age of almost 2, and I had Nora. So we took them to the park, coffee shop, stroller ridin' downtown as we hit up the little shops and cooked dinner for the men, plus two good loafs of homemade zucchini bread in which one loaf exploded (a whole other story). It was like a match made in girlfriend heaven.

So to stop myself from rambling on about our mishaps and adventures. The whole reason behind this post is the show off my new friend! :) Katie's birthday is coming up, tomorrow to be exact. So we spent an evening shooting at the local car dump (my new fav spot)! Too bad the men were working and our kiddos who had to come along were being possesed by the boo-hoo bunny, or else we could have gotten a lot more accomplished. :) But I think we did okay with what we had. so here they are, oh & HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KATIE!

Jude the Dude, Pt. II

On the outskirts of Downtown Gillette lies an enormous car pile junk yard, among other things. Being that Jude (the dude) loves cars so much, it was only fair that we took him to the this spot for his photos! He was so overwhelmed, he hardly once would even look at the camera. :) It was like I was interrupting his adventure. We had a blast, and the sun set too early for our eager hearts. I do believe we will be back. Happy 2nd Birthday Jude!!

Since I was little, I always looked up to my older, much cooler, ridiculously pretty cousin, Melissa. I remember when I was about 7 years old, I was at her Mom's (my Aunt's) house, and Melissa coming in the kitchen and being all cool, talking small talk with her mom and then someone mentioned how she was 17 yrs old and how that must be nice, yada yada. Then Melissa took off in her T-Top Camaro with racing stripes and bleach blonde hair, and Guns-N-Roses echoing thru the woods as she rolled on down the driveway. Now remind you, I was SEVEN, and I was playing under the table (don't ask) and thinking,

"Wow, 17 is such a cool age, it is the same number that the disney channel came on that we didn't get at home. Man, I wish I was 17."

Later on that day, I made my way outside to play. And I found the most awesome thing a 7 year old pentecostal girl could find, RED FAKE NAILS that Melissa must of snapped off and thrown in the wind. Let me tell you, I tried so hard to press those things on my own little fingers. I finally got those suckers on and immediately felt, fancy. 17. sassy. you know, all the attitude that comes with fire red fake fingernails. Of course I felt like I was going to get in trouble, so as soon as Mom started hollering for me, I snapped 'em back off and said goodbye to my new found love. I will never forget that day.

I grew up under Melissa's shadow. My mother used to drop me off on summer days when when I was a pre-teen and let me help melissa with her babies. I would do anything Melissa asked, hold them, play with them, watch them while she took a shower. We ate turkey sandwiches and 3-D Doritos like they were going out of style and occasionally hit up Kentucky Kingdom. She introduced me to my first Big Mac and we took a trip to the beach in Florida. Melissa, you will never know how much you influenced me, and how much those days meant to me.

Ironically, I took up photography, which is exactly what Melissa does. I would like to think that growing up seeing her work and appreciating her talent, is one of the reasons I am who I am today. I cannot thank her enough, for guiding my little pentecostal, backwoods, strangled pony-tailed self into the lady I am today. So thank you, Melissa. and God love red fake fingernails!

Good Morning America!

On a typical morning, we play. Eat a little bit, then play some more. And maybe, if we're lucky, play right on thru naptime. Which is what we did on this particular morning. And as of now, the little one is puckered out in her crib- she had to cry it out a bit tho, just to let me know I should never make her play thru naptime again. :)

This would be her standing up looking out the window.

Possibly for Daddy? Or just checking the weather.

Please someone tell me the name of this toy. I know I played with it when I was little, and just about every cousin or friend of mine had one. This thing is ancient! & she loves it! Out with the new and in with the old, I say!

Peek-A-Boo, I see you! She's such a prankster. :)

Now this would be her new 'face'. She makes this when she's mad, when she's trying to pull her self out of the high chair, and when she's showing her attitude. This would be the attitude version.

Being careful not to jinx her, this lady has a bright future. :)

I do do weddings. No, I don't doo-doo on weddings. :) Mind out of the gutter people. I also, photograph weddings! I realize that I don't post a lot of wedding stuff- and that is just peculiar of me! So here's a slideshow of a wedding Dustin and I shot back in May in Louisville. The lovely Newlyweds are Susan and Murray, and they are just awesome people. We would all be lucky to know more Susan and Murray's in our life.

Sweet Victory

It's something we've always talked about. Something I've always dreamed about as a kid. Something I never really thought would happen. You know, like when you really want something, but it seems too big of an idea, too much hassle or confusion... "Well why leave your family and friends, and go somewhere where you don't know anybody?" ...I could always hear them say. "What's so bad about it here?"...and so on. And you know, they just don't get it. It's not about Kentucky. It's not home that I'm running from. Heck, I love Kentucky. I really do, I even teared up when the song, "My Old Kentucky Home" played thru my iTunes the other day- got so touched I even made it my new ringtone. No lie. What it is, is the simple taste of adventure. Something new. Opening my eyes and mind to a different way of life, a new town, new people. Not too mention the scenery to boot. I've just always seen myself running off with someone, doing what a lot of people can't seem to do. Just let go of whatever it is rooting you, and set free. The timing is right. Nora is small enough that schooling isn't a factor. We're starting our life together. I just couldn't see a better start then taking off and having just ourselves to take care of each other. I believe this is why the special forces of fate (if you believe in so) has put us together. We're the same in one. We both have the ideas and dreams, and Dustin is just the right guy to put them in motion. I believe we need someone in life that says, "Why not?" as opposed to, "We just can't, it's not logical."

So here we are, in the great, wide-open, beautiful state of Wyoming. I took a deep breath right thru my nostrils and the smell is of sweet victory. I did it, I made into reality something that had been put in my mind was too far fetched. The drive from the airport in Montana to our hometown of Gillette was my new passage to life. The sky was a beautiful blue and the clouds were fluffy and perfectly weightless. The scenery, wow, I can hardly sum into words. Untouched, natural, spacious. Perfect. This was my new home. My new home. Did I just say that! WAHOO!! I just had to let it out. :)

Our life together now seems nothing short of a million possibilities and lots of unknown treasures. I love not knowing what's to come, it's what keeps me alive.

So... are you wondering what we're doing to survive? Thinking these crazy kids don't have a clue? haha. We're aren't that crazy, here's the rundown: Dustin applied for the paper in Provo, Ut for their Staff Photojournalist position. He then received a phone call from the paper in Gillette, WY (that was affiliated with the Provo paper) and they were impressed with his website (http://www.altonstrupp.com) and wanted to fly him out for an interview. They offered him the job and he accepted. So he is working here as a photojournalist for The News Record, (http://www.gillettenewsrecord.com/) and I am starting up my photography business here in town.

P.S. How sad it would be, to be an old lady with a lot of "Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda's."- that just scares the daylights right outta me!

Nora's Nonnie.

Since the move, (which I haven't blogged about yet, but is coming very soon) I'm pretty sure Nora is missing her Nonnie. (Dustin's mom). She is so good with Nora, always reading to her, playing with her, teaching her things and putting that 'grandma' touch in everything she does with her. So I thought Jody, aka Nonnie, deserved her very own blog. We love and miss you, Nonnie! Hugs & Kisses from here to there.

**Nora misses all her grandparents equally. Shall there be no jealousy of this dedication. :) For yours is to come soon.

So here's how it went.

It was the Thursday before our "big" move. We had been to town that day, running errands, picking out plates, bedding, furniture, shower curtains & all, you know, the usual. Dustin mentioned, "We should take a walk on the farm tonight." I'm pretty sure I said something like, "yeah, sure, that would be great, don't think we'll have the time. I'd rather go out to eat with TA & Cody one last time before we leave." something like that. And that was that.

So we return home from our outing, Dustin is watching Nora for me and I decide to do some editing, emailing, that sort of thing. I'm upstairs, in my room, at my desk- totally oblivious to the fact that Dustin is downstairs scheming with everyone for the big Q! I take a break, call TA (who isn't answering), and start leaving her messages about not calling me back, and I'm hungry- I know you are too, let's go EAT! etc! I go downstairs and Dustin has changed and has Nora snapped to his chest and says, "let's go for a walk, please?" I decline, mention I'm hungry (for the 100th time). Say it's already 7 and I'm going to get all nasty and sticky out there in that heat and won't look good for our dinner. (what? I'm a girl. & Ky humidity is insane). So after about 20 min. he talks me into taking a walk. (I know, I caved) he just looked so sweet strapped to our baby girl. I put on a Carhartt hat, white tee & cowboy boots and grab my camera. Completely ready for nothing more than the farm, cow do-do and mosquitos. before we are even halfway down the lane, my camera dies! Ah! & the light was glorious that evening, I look back towards the house, and Dustin begs, "noooo, let's just take the walk?!"...so again, I cave. and slightly boo-hoo because I'm not kidding, the light was glorious. Then I hear my Dad hollering, I turn around holler back, "Whaaaaattt??" and he hollers, "Have a good time!!!" - and that was really odd. My Dad never just says something like that. Still, I'm not catching on.

We walk past the first barn, it is a worn black color, with a big Kentucky state pained white above the double doors. I take a deep breath and get a little choked up. I realize this is probably the last time I walk on the farm before the move. But, I fight back the tears and play it cool. Then we walk past this old fort that had been standing until a couple summers ago that me and my cousins, brother & sister made when we were little. We spent everyday back there with Papaw while he worked, getting into all sorts of trouble and adventure. And I mention to Dustin how beautiful Kentucky can be. Then play it cool before I get all emotional. Moving along we're almost to the creek and I stop him. Something in the air was just, (this is about to get corny, but I swear) magical. Serene. Peaceful. Something was just right. I hug Dustin and Nora and felt inclined to shoosh them and make them soak up the moment. Grasshoppers were fluttering, the alfalfa was high enough for a cutting so it swayed a bit in the breeze. The sun was setting and the cloud coverage was amazing. You could see the rays beaming thru on the grass and over the hills. You could hear the crickets and the little bugs everywhere. The cows were grazing and moving around, the occasional moo and the creek was right along side of us. It was my heaven.

And then Dustin's moves me along in a hurry to get to the creek. Opens the gate. And I say, "You wantin' to cross that creek?"

"No. Just want to see something...."

"What? You're acting wierd...."

Then I hear a guitar. I do a 360...

"Did you hear that?"

Then out pops Cody from under the bride singing and playing the guitar. No lie, I say,

"Oh hey Cody!"

Then as I turn back to Dustin, he's on his knee!!! I immediately start balling. Then out pops TA with the video camera. Then out pops my cousin Melissa with her camera. I can't seem to focus or hear a word Dustin is saying. He's wrote something and is reading it off a paper, but all I can think/hear/see is the moment. I can't believe this is it.

& I said yes!

It was the perfect moment, the perfect night. I am so happy to be engaged to my best friend. :) Life is so unpredictable. It takes so many twist and turns and before you know it, you look back and see how far you've come and can see so clearly the path you were on. All while feeling lost and unsure of the future. And to think, I'm still young, there is so much more to experience and treasure, but now it's certain that it won't be a lonely journey. I am so blessed. :) Wahoo!!!

So much has happened in my life since I last blogged, that I'm just not sure how to start this one. Should I blurt out my good news? My whereabouts? or should I leave you guessing, edge of your seats like a good book you can't put down? Or should I break it all up in different blogs so that each day for like, the next week you get a new chapter in my life?...ehhhh- let's just see what happens...

So. First off.

Here are some photos from a few of my shoots within the last month.

Here is Miss Carlee Burd. She is my dear friend Kim's little girl. Such a sweetie. This was a family shoot, and believe it or not, Carlee's Dad, Ben, pulled a GIGANTIC snapping turtle out of my creek with his bare hands. & took it home to make turtle soup. No lie. I'll add the pic to prove it. :)

Whoops, sorry, these are out of order...this is from a Senior session of mine- Ethan Laha. His parents own the local hamburger joint down at the square, I mean circle, or "Squircle" in Hodgenville. Laha's White Castle. Good burgers, check 'em out. Here's a couple from the shoot...

The other night I had a shoot with the lovely couple, Kaelyn & Brandon. I have known these two since we were just kids, so when they asked me to shoot their Maternity Photos, I was honored! I am so happy for them and I just know they will make such great parents. Oh, and they're having a boy! Little Owen. How sweet is the name?! Can't wait to meet the little stinker. First and foremost, I am sorry I have left you alone in my blogger land with nothing to gander at for a bit. I have been super swamped this month with sessions and probably for the next week or so I'll have a daily photo update...but don't hold me to it, I have a 5 month old that demands a lot of me, let alone the emails, sessions, editing, phonecalls, cooking, cleaning, need I go on?? :)

SO here we are, or should I saw there she is...Reagan Marie! This little 5 day old doll was born on June 28th, 2009 and had more hair than your granddaddy's back! I swear, I couldn't remember mine being that little. It's crazy. I was honored to shoot her morning routine, not to mention her very FIRST bath at home! Ahh! Wonderful. Hope you enjoy the pics. And I could always use a little comment love. :)

And if you haven't today, you really should...tell someone they look awfully purty.

Last week I was lucky enough to shoot my dear cousin, Alex and his beautiful wife, Megan. The shoot was last minute- no babysitter, so Nora joined us and literally screamed the entire time. [Thank you Matt for holding her during the fit, there is a place for you in heaven, no doubt]. Needless to say, I got some good stuff for them and looking thru the photos you'd never guess there was a crying baby behind the scenes stressing anyone out. :) Here's a photo from the shoot. My dad has been bailing hay all day and Nora & I have been watching him from the back yard. There is nothing sweeter than a day like today.

Oh and I'm so excited for this weekend. Picking up Dustin from the Airport tomorrow night, then shooting an awesome wedding on Sat. We're going to have the 5d Mark II as well, and boy oh boy I'm going to kiss that camera right on the trigger when I see it. :)
